Choosing exogeneity assumptions in potential outcome models

چکیده
Summary There are many kinds of exogeneity assumptions. How should researchers choose among them? When is imposed on an unobservable like a potential outcome, we argue that the form be chosen based kind selection unobservables it allows. Consequently, can assess plausibility any assumption by studying distributions treatment given consistent with assumption. We use this approach to study two common assumptions: quantile and mean independence. show both assumptions require nonmonotonic relationship between outcomes. discuss how selection. also define new weaker version independence allows for monotonic unobservables. then implications choice identification. apply these results in empirical illustration effect child soldiering wages.

Testing for Exogeneity in Nonlinear Threshold Models
Most work in the area of nonlinear econometric modelling is based on a single equation and assumes exogeneity of the explanatory variables. Recently, work by Caner and Hansen (2003) and Psaradakis, Sola, and Spagnolo (2004) has considered the possibility of estimating nonlinear models by methods that take into account endogeneity but provided no tests for exogeneity. This paper examines the pro...
متن کاملChoosing an outcome measure.
Most orthopaedic surgeons are being asked to evaluate the outcome of their practice with very little guidance as to how to accomplish this. Their approach may be simply to conduct short-term audit of perioperative complications regularly, or to implement some form of measuring instrument which can be given to all patients. They may wish to implement an outcome measure but are unable to obtain a...
متن کاملMultiplicative panel data models without the strict exogeneity assumption
This paper studies estimation of multiplicative, unobserved components panel data models without imposing the strict exogeneity assumption on the explanatory variables. The method of moments estimators proposed have significant robustness properties; they require only a conditional mean assumption, and apply to models with lagged dependent variables, finite distributed lag models that allow arb...

متن کاملChoosing between Order-of-Entry Assumptions in Empirical Entry Models: Evidence from Competition between Burger King and McDonald’s Restaurant Outlets
We demonstrate how a non-nested statistical test developed by Vuong (1989) can be used to assess the suitability of alternate order-of-entry assumptions used for identification purposes in empirical entry models. As an example, we estimate an entry model of McDonald’s and Burger King restaurant outlets in United States. The data set focuses on relatively small “isolated” markets. For these mark...
